The series consists of subject files of the Washington Office of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) from 1963-1968. Includes mostly printed material with some correspondence, memoranda, and newspaper clippings. Among the more important subjects included in these files are James P. Coleman's nomination to the Fifth Federal Circuit Court, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, housing, police brutality, school desegregation, opposition to the Vietnam War, and voting rights. The series also contains statistical information on many southern states.

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was created in 1960 at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Its purpose was to coordinate the student protest movement. SNCC led voter registration drives in Mississippi and other southern states, held civil rights demonstrations advocating social integration, and sponsored the Freedom Summer of 1964 in Mississippi.
